Birgi
A UN-honoured Ottoman village in the inland Aegean hills.
About Birgi
In the hills inland from İzmir, far from Turkey's crowded coast, Birgi is a village that rewards slowing down. Once the capital of a medieval Aegean principality and a Silk Road trading town, it kept its timber Ottoman houses, cobbled lanes and ancient plane trees — a living streetscape that earned it a place on UN Tourism's list of the world's best villages in 2022. At its heart stand the tile-and-carved-wood Great Mosque of 1312 and the Çakırağa Mansion, an eighteenth-century konak whose walls are painted with panoramas of old İstanbul and İzmir. The pleasures are gentle: a coffee in a courtyard, the Monday market, a stay in a restored stone konak, a drive up to the Bozdağ mountains and the crater lake of Gölcük. It is quietest — and best — midweek, before the weekend day-trippers arrive. Pair it with Şirince and Ephesus, and Birgi becomes the calm, authentic heart of an inland-Aegean escape.
Sleep over in one of Birgi's restored konak guesthouses and visit midweek — weekends fill with domestic day-trippers, and Monday is the atmospheric village market.

Destination.moneyTips
- 1Prices are low versus the coast — konak rooms often run $40–90, cheapest midweek.
- 2Carry some cash — small family konaks and the Monday market can be card-light.
当地交通
- 1A car is recommended: ~110–120 km / 1.5–2h from İzmir via Ödemiş.
- 2Without a car: train İzmir Basmane → Ödemiş (~2h), then a minibus or short taxi to Birgi.
- 3Pair it with Şirince, Selçuk/Ephesus and İzmir on an inland-Aegean loop.
Destination.mostCommonMistake
Visiting on a weekend or as a quick photo stop — Birgi's appeal is slow, so come midweek and stay the night in a konak.
