Kyushu

Kyushu is the Japan most itineraries skip, and the one that earns a second trip. The southern island runs on volcanoes: Mount Aso sits inside one of the largest calderas on earth, its crater still steaming and reachable by ropeway, and the heat rising off it feeds onsen towns in every direction. Beppu turns that heat into spectacle at the Seven Hells, pools of cobalt and blood red far too hot to bathe in, while Kurokawa keeps the opposite promise: wooden ryokan along a gorge, lantern light, open-air baths booked by the hour. Fukuoka anchors the island and is the reason it works as a single base. It is the rare Japanese city whose subway runs straight into the domestic airport terminal, and after dark the yatai stalls fold out along the river and serve ramen from a plastic stool. Kumamoto adds a samurai castle rebuilt stone by stone, Nagasaki a harbour where Japan met the outside world first, and the shinkansen turns both into a day trip. Come for the hot springs, and stay because everything else turned out to be closer than you thought.
