Lake Como is not just a destination; it is a living gallery of historic villas, botanical gardens and deep water ringed by the Alps. To experience it properly — without ending up stranded on the wrong side of the water — you have to understand the clear geographic contrast between its three core areas. The Golden Triangle (Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio) is the lake’s iconic, beating heart, the place where your feed comes to life: steep stone lanes, cafés crowded along the waterline and frequent ferries that link the towns with ease — staying here suits anyone who wants to be in the middle of it all, hop between towns on a short crossing and never miss a classic frame. The exclusive west shore (Cernobbio and Tremezzo) is the strip of grand historic hotels — the legendary villas and floating sundecks — and it offers longer afternoon sun, open views over the wide part of the lake, and easier access by car to the city of Como and the Swiss border; this is the ultra-luxury retreat, quiet and sophisticated. The city of Como and the southern tip are the gateway: an excellent choice for anyone who wants to combine the lake’s picture-postcard vibe with urban convenience — designer shops, top chef restaurants and a direct link to the fast train from Milan. The experience here is less “isolated and regal,” but it is the most practical and accessible. In the end, at Como the choice comes down to the right side of the water.
Don’t base in Como city expecting "the lake of the photos" — the prettiest villages (Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio) are an hour north by ferry. Stay mid-lake and let the ferry be your transport. Come in May–June or September: August is gridlocked and many of the best hotels are booked a year out.
