Rome

Rome is a city where every layer is still visible. Walk ten minutes and you cross three thousand years — a ruined temple wedged between apartment blocks, a Baroque fountain roaring on a quiet square, a church built on a church built on something older still. The great sights earn their fame: the Forum, the vast dome of St Peter’s across a newly car-free approach, the Pantheon’s perfect open eye to the sky, and a Colosseum where — since 2025 — you can once again stand on a reconstructed arena floor. After the 2025 Jubilee drew tens of millions of pilgrims, the city has emerged calmer and freshly restored, its fountains and piazzas scrubbed clean and the Trevi flowing again. Yet Rome is happiest in its rhythms: the espresso taken standing at the bar, the evening passeggiata through Trastevere’s lanes, the long dinner that starts late and never hurries. Get lost on purpose in the centro storico, seek out the trattorias of Testaccio, eat cacio e pepe where the locals do. This is not a museum you visit but a living city built out of history — give it time, and it gives back more than any guidebook promises.
