About San Francisco

San Francisco was not built on a plain — it was born of a wild mountain ridge that insisted on meeting the Pacific, and that is exactly how it feels: a city of extreme geographic contrasts that forces you into constant motion, up and down, physically and mentally, where every summit offers a new angle on life and every steep descent takes you deeper into a mosaic of small neighbourhoods, fog crawling in from the bay and a mentality of total freedom. Its physical drama is that of an urban cliff: streets like Filbert or 22nd Street reach insane gradients of more than 30 degrees, and when you stand at their foot and look up, the colourful Victorian houses look like giant stairs climbing into the sky — and when you reach the top on foot or in a historic cable car, for a moment you feel on top of the world, the blue bay and Alcatraz Island spread out beneath you; and Lombard Street, the crookedest in the world, is the most contorted architectural solution to the steep drop of Russian Hill — eight sharp turns wrapped in flowers, built originally just so cars could descend that crazy slope without losing their brakes. But San Francisco’s ups and downs are also its DNA: no other city in America presents so sharp a contrast between the peaks of Silicon Valley’s technological success and the painful slope of the streets below — within a few minutes’ walk you cross from the glittering wealth of the Financial District or the hills of Nob Hill straight into the harsh reality of the less photogenic corners. And the weather, too, climbs and drops at its own pace: because of the many hills the city is divided into tiny climate zones (microclimates), so you can freeze under a grey blanket of fog at the Golden Gate Bridge, drop a few kilometres south to the Mission District, and find yourself under warm sun, in a t-shirt, amid vibrant Latin energy. The bottom line: San Francisco does not let you stay indifferent or rest on your laurels — it demands that you climb, strain, stand against the cold ocean wind, and then descend to the quiet of the parks or the hidden alleys of Chinatown; it is the physical proof that the most beautiful views in life come only after the hardest climb.

Destination.sherryTake

Stay in Union Square / Nob Hill for transit + walkability, or Hayes Valley / Mission for restaurants and a more local feel. Skip "Fisherman's Wharf" hotels — overpriced and far from anything else.

Destination.moneyTips

  • 1CityPASS or the Go San Francisco Pass pays for itself if you do 3+ paid attractions (Alcatraz, Aquarium, etc).
  • 2Ferry Building marketplace food vendors are cheaper and better than the Fisherman's Wharf chain restaurants.
  • 3Cable cars are $8 a ride — buy a 3-day Visitor Passport ($35) instead.

当地交通

  • 1SFO → Union Square: BART subway $10.50, 30 min, every 15 min. Far cheaper than rideshare ($60+).
  • 2MUNI buses + Metro + cable cars all use Clipper card or the MuniMobile app — $2.50 a ride, day pass $5.25.
  • 3San Francisco is hilly — wear shoes you can climb in, and budget extra rideshare for late-night uphill returns.

Destination.mostCommonMistake

Packing for "California summer" in July — the city is foggy and 60°F when the rest of CA is 90°F.
