Tromsø

Capital of the northern lights — a lively city 350 km north of the Arctic Circle.

About Tromsø

Tromsø is not just another quiet Nordic town — it is the official playground of the Arctic. It sits on a small island in northern Norway, ringed by deep blue fjords and dramatic snow-capped peaks, and offers an unusual mix of extreme Arctic nature on one side, and wild nightlife, a lively student culture and excellent restaurants on the other. It earned the nickname “Paris of the North” for its surprising energy, but its real character is tough, warm and grounded — here life is dictated by the forces of nature, whether the “midnight sun” of summer, when the day never ends, or the long winter nights when everyone lifts their eyes to the sky waiting for the green dancer. Tromsø is one of the best places in the world to hunt the Northern Lights: skip the viewpoints inside the city because of the light pollution — the real way is to head out with local guides deep into the wild, sometimes as far as the Finnish border, light a bonfire in the snow, drink hot cocoa and wait for the sky to turn luminous green and purple. To get a sense of scale, ride the Fjellheisen cable car up to the mountain peak overlooking the city — the view from the top is insane: all of Tromsø spreads out beneath you as a small island connected to the mainland by thin bridges, surrounded by dark water and huge snowy mountains stretching to the horizon. And at the end of the main bridge stands the Arctic Cathedral, a modern masterpiece that looks like a giant iceberg or a traditional Sami tent thrusting into the sky, dramatically lit at night and defining the city’s white skyline. And the easiest tip of all: don’t settle for wandering the city — take a short local bus to the neighbouring island of Kvaløya (“Whale Island”), where the roads wind between deep, wild fjords, and in winter you can stand on the shoreline and watch orcas and humpback whales swimming right up close to the shore — without paying hundreds of euros for expensive tourist cruises.

Sherry's Take

Book an "aurora chase" tour, not a fixed viewpoint — the guides drive to wherever the sky is clear, sometimes as far as Finland, which doubles your odds of seeing the lights.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1Norway is expensive — a hotel with a generous breakfast is worth gold (and a light lunch from the buffet…).
  • 2The Fjellheisen cable car at sunset gives the best view in town — cheaper than an organized tour.
  • 3A supermarket + a kitchenette in the room saves a fortune vs restaurants (a main is 250–400 NOK).

当地交通

  • 1The airport is 15 minutes away — airport bus, or the regular city line (far cheaper).
  • 2Downtown everything is on foot.
  • 3Aurora tours pick you up from your hotel — no car needed.

Most Common Mistake

Expecting to see the aurora from inside the city — the city lights hide it. Without a tour or a drive out, you mostly see streetlamps.
