Dolomites

There are mountains, and then there are the Dolomites. This range in northern Italy looks like nothing else in Europe: instead of soft, rounded green slopes you find jagged, dramatic rock towers in a pale grey hue, as if they had landed here from another planet — a perfect blend of wild alpine power, mesmerising quiet and fine Italian carbs. The real magic comes toward sunset, when the distinctive limestone glows in intense pink, orange and purple, a phenomenon called Enrosadira — not an Instagram filter, just nature at its most glorious. And like the scenery, the culture here is two-faced in the best sense: the South Tyrol region hovers between Italy and Austria — signs in both languages (and sometimes in the local Ladin), German order and cleanliness but with Italian joie de vivre and perfect Italian food; at lunch a local knödel (canederli), and in the evening fresh pasta and a glass of fine red wine. To experience it right, skip the kitsch: Lago di Braies with its pretty boats is a photogenic magnet but exhaustingly crowded — if you want real quiet, get lost in the vast Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s highest alpine meadow, or climb the insane Seceda ridge. And instead of returning to a valley hotel every evening, book a night in advance at a rifugio (mountain hut) up on the ridges: the silence of the night, the star-strewn sky and the morning coffee facing the bare peaks — before the first hikers arrive by cable car — are the most authentic experience there is. Just don’t try to see it all: the Dolomites demand a slow pace. Grab a wooden bench beside an old hut, order a cold Aperol Spritz, and let your eyes drink in the view.
