Hallstatt
A postcard village on an alpine lake — the prettiest in Europe, the size of a neighborhood.
About Hallstatt
Hallstatt is an ancient, picturesque alpine village set in the magnificent Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria, about 75 kilometres south-east of Salzburg. The village, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered one of the most famous and most photographed destinations in Europe, instantly recognisable for its dramatic geographic position: an extraordinarily narrow strip of land pressed between the steep cliffs of Mount Dachstein and the dark, clear waters of Lake Hallstatt (the Hallstätter See). Beyond its mesmerising visual beauty — sixteenth-century wooden houses climbing the mountainside and picturesque lanes closed to car traffic — Hallstatt holds a rich and extraordinary history thousands of years old. The village’s historic heart beats underground, home to the oldest still-active salt mine in the world, which gave the whole region its wealth and influence as far back as the Iron Age — an era itself named the “Hallstatt culture” after the archaeological finds discovered here. Today the village is a unique meeting of ancient history, protected Austrian folk culture, and wild, breathtaking alpine nature.
Stay a night in the village itself. Between 10:00 and 16:00 Hallstatt is flooded with day-trip buses — but in the evening and early morning it's all yours, and that's the whole difference.

Destination.whereToStay
Hallstatt centre
Small lakeside guesthouses; books up months ahead
Obertraun
Across the lake, 5 min by train/ferry, significantly cheaper
Bad Goisern
Convenient base with a car, 10 min drive
Destination.moneyTips
- 1Staying in Obertraun saves 30–40% and gives you the same lake.
- 2The ferry from the train station to the village is ~€4; no car needed (village parking is pricey and limited).
- 3The salt mine + Skywalk as a combo ticket is cheaper than separate tickets.
当地交通
- 1Train from Salzburg/Vienna to Hallstatt station + a short ferry across the lake — the most beautiful arrival there is.
- 2Within the village everything is on foot (and it's tiny).
- 3Funicular up to the salt mine and the viewpoint.
Destination.mostCommonMistake
Doing it as a day trip from Vienna. 7 hours of round-trip driving for two hours in the most crowded village — instead of a magical evening and morning with no tourists.
