Montenegro is not a country of compromises — it is simply wild. Its name, Crna Gora, roughly means “the Black Mountain,” and that is exactly the vibe: giant, dark, steep cliffs that look as if they were cut with a knife, falling straight into the Mediterranean coastline. It is small and crazy, offering an almost brutally fast transition between sun-drenched beaches and misty, snow-capped peaks — and its power lies precisely in those contrasts: on one side ancient Venetian towns on the water, and on the other raw nature, virgin forests and deep canyons untouched for centuries. The southern half is the Bay — calm blue water, narrow roads along the shoreline and a slow, fisherman’s pace — but the moment you turn inland and climb, the scenery changes completely: insanely winding roads, narrow canyons and a sense of total solitude in nature. Montenegro sits on a historic fault line, so you find distinct Italian-Venetian influences on the coast (in the architecture and the food) alongside a tougher, rougher Balkan-Slavic vibe the further south or higher you go. To do it right: if the Bay is the blue heart, Durmitor National Park is the green-wild one — an incredible mountainous area in the north with clear glacial lakes (chief among them the “Black Lake”), vast meadows and the Tara River Canyon, the deepest in Europe; on the way, take the Kotor Serpentine, the road linking Kotor to the mountain village of Njeguši — 25 sharp hairpin turns on a near-vertical cliff face, where with every bend the bay below looks smaller until you are driving right inside the clouds; and up north, the higher you climb the heavier and more warming the food gets — don’t miss Kačamak, a traditional mountain dish of mashed potato with flour, rich local cheese and melted butter: heavy, simple, and the best thing to eat after a day of hiking in the mountains.
