Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is not just another desert; it is a vast expanse of red sand and giant sandstone cliffs that look as if they were carved by a deliberate hand: there are no typical dunes or dull wasteland here, but a landscape that is dramatic, aggressive and restrained all at once, feeling like the surface of Mars — no ornament, no filters, just raw nature, absolute silence and a scale that makes everything look small. The essence of the desert is in its colours and textures: the rock shifts through the day, from a mustard yellow at noon to a deep rust-red and glowing orange at sunset, and the cliffs are grooved and rough — testament to millions of years of wind and water; and the silence here is extreme, an almost tangible physical quiet, which at night — when the desert wind dies down — opens onto a perfectly clear display of the Milky Way, with no light pollution and no background interference. To experience it right, lodging splits in two: simple, traditional Bedouin tents that blend into the rock, or futuristic geodesic domes with huge windows facing straight onto the volcanic landscape — both keep a direct connection to the sand outside. Moving through this vast space is only by 4x4 jeep, and instead of the crowded tourist route it is worth arranging in advance with a local guide to reach lesser-known spots like the secluded Barrah Canyon, where you walk on foot between sheer rock walls in real quiet. And finally, Wadi Rum is full of natural rock bridges formed by erosion — the most impressive being the Burdah Rock Bridge and the Um Frouth arch — and climbing to them takes some physical effort, but the view from the top over the red expanse is worth every step.
