Sherry's Take
Bali is several trips in one island — don't try to "do Bali" from a single base. Split your stay: Ubud (jungle + culture) first, then a beach base — Uluwatu for cliffs and surf, Seminyak/Canggu for beach clubs and cafés, Nusa Dua for calm resort swimming.

Where to Stay
Ubud
Rice terraces, yoga, temples, monkey forest — Bali's cultural heart
Seminyak / Canggu
Beach clubs, brunch cafés, surf schools, digital-nomad buzz
Uluwatu (Bukit)
Clifftop temples and villas, world-class surf, dramatic sunsets
Nusa Dua
Gated resort strip, calm swimmable water, family-safe
Money-Saving Tips
- 1A private driver for a full day costs $40–55 and beats ride-hailing for multi-stop temple days.
- 2Warung meals (nasi goreng, mie goreng) are $1.50–3 — the same dish at a beach club is $12.
- 3Change money ONLY at authorized counters (PT-prefixed) — street counters with "too good" rates short-count notes.
Getting Around
- 1DPS airport → Seminyak 30 min, Ubud 1.5h, Uluwatu 45 min — pre-book or use the official taxi counter.
- 2Grab and Gojek work in the south (cheap!), but are banned in some villages — your hotel can call a local driver.
- 3Scooters are the local default but Bali traffic is chaotic — only ride if experienced, always helmeted, with an IDP.
Most Common Mistake
Underestimating distances — "Ubud to Uluwatu" looks close on the map but is 2+ hours in traffic. Plan one region per day, not three.
