Dead Sea (Jordan)

The Dead Sea from the Jordanian shore — resort spas, mineral mud, and biblical sites an hour from Amman.

Sherry's Take

Almost every Jordanian Dead Sea hotel sits on one resort strip at Sweimeh, ~1 hour from Amman and Queen Alia Airport. If you're already doing Petra and Wadi Rum, buy the Jordan Pass BEFORE you fly — it waives the visa fee (worth ~40 JOD) when you stay 3+ nights and bundles most sites.

Where to Stay

Sweimeh resort strip

Where every 5-star resort lives — private mineral beaches and spas, all on one stretch of shore

Amman Beach (O Beach)

The public beach + pools option for day-trippers who aren't staying at a resort

Ma'in

Thermal hot-spring waterfalls in the hills ~30 min south — a spa resort of its own

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1Rates almost always include private beach + spa access; a day-pass for non-guests runs ~25–35 JOD if you sleep in Amman instead.
  • 2Most resorts push half-board or all-inclusive — worth it here, since the strip is isolated and there are almost no independent restaurants nearby.
  • 3The mineral mud on the beach is free — skip the packaged "Dead Sea mud" spa upsell and scoop it yourself.

Getting Around

  • 1Queen Alia Airport (AMM) → Sweimeh is ~45–60 min by car; a taxi or hotel transfer is ~25–35 JOD. There is no useful public bus to the resorts.
  • 2From Amman city it's ~1 hour down the Dead Sea Highway (Route 65). A rental car makes combining Madaba, Mount Nebo and Bethany easy.
  • 3Petra is ~3 hours south and Wadi Rum ~4 — most travelers chain Dead Sea → Petra → Wadi Rum rather than day-trip them.

Most Common Mistake

Booking "Dead Sea" without checking the shore — the Jordanian side is a separate country with its own visa / Jordan Pass, and you can't casually hop to the Israeli side (it's a full border crossing). Pick your country first.
