About Haifa
Haifa is the calm one of Israel’s big three — a port city that climbs Mount Carmel in tiers, trading Tel Aviv’s rush and Jerusalem’s intensity for sea breeze and quiet. Its centrepiece is the Bahai Gardens, nineteen manicured terraces of hedge and fountain cascading down the hillside around a golden-domed shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the loveliest view in the city. Below them the German Colony runs in a straight pedestrian line of restored Templer houses, restaurants and bars pointing straight up at the gardens. This is Israel’s model of coexistence, and you taste it in the food — the Arab bakeries and hummus of Wadi Nisnas, the market stalls of Hadar. Stay high on the Carmel ridge for cool nights and the panorama, or in the German Colony to eat on foot. Add the crusader old town of Akko and the Rosh Hanikra grottoes nearby, and Haifa rewards the unhurried traveller who likes a city that exhales.
