Osaka
Japan's kitchen — neon-lit Dotonbori, takoyaki + okonomiyaki, friendlier than Tokyo, half the price.
About Osaka
If Kyoto is Japan at its most refined, Osaka is Japan at its most fun — loud, warm and gloriously obsessed with eating. This is the country’s kitchen, a city that lives by the word kuidaore, “eat until you drop,” and nowhere more than in Dotonbori, where neon signs and the running-man Glico billboard blaze over a canal lined with stalls of sizzling takoyaki octopus balls and okonomiyaki pancakes. Graze the seafood aisles of Kuromon market, eat and drink your way through the retro streets of Shinsekai beneath the Tsutenkaku tower, then walk it off in the vast green moat of Osaka Castle. Osakans are famously the friendliest, funniest people in Japan — this is the home of the country’s comedy — and the mood is street-level and unpretentious. It also makes the perfect Kansai base, with Kyoto, Nara and Kobe all about half an hour away. Come hungry, stay for the good humour, and let Osaka feed you until you can’t move.
Stay in Namba / Shinsaibashi for street food + shopping, or Umeda for transit + business. Stay 3 nights minimum — most people underestimate how much there is and end up rushed.
