Sherry's Take

Stay in Ipanema or Leblon, not Copacabana: same beach culture, noticeably safer evenings, better restaurants. Do Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf on your first clear-sky morning — afternoon clouds swallow the views more days than not.

Where to Stay

Ipanema

Chic beach blocks, sunset at Arpoador, café society

Leblon

Upscale, calmer, Rio's best restaurants

Copacabana

The iconic crescent — lively, touristy, mixed bag at night

Santa Teresa

Bohemian hilltop, colonial villas, art studios

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1Beach kiosks rent chairs + umbrella for R$25 — hotels charge R$100 for the same sand.
  • 2Por kilo (pay-by-weight) buffets do excellent lunch for R$40–60.
  • 3Uber is cheap and the default — a Leblon ↔ Centro ride is R$25–35; never hail street taxis at night.

Getting Around

  • 1GIG airport → Zona Sul: Uber/99 R$70–110, 45–70 min by traffic. The Premium bus (Real) is R$22 if you land in daylight.
  • 2Metrô is clean, safe and beats traffic: Ipanema ↔ Centro in 25 min, R$7.50.
  • 3Christ the Redeemer: take the official Trem do Corcovado from Cosme Velho — "vans" sold on the beach are gray-market.

Most Common Mistake

Flashing phones and jewelry on the beach or at night — Rio is wonderful but petty theft is real. Take a beach-only phone, leave the watch in the safe, and use Ubers after dark.
