Sherry's Take
Stay in Ipanema or Leblon, not Copacabana: same beach culture, noticeably safer evenings, better restaurants. Do Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf on your first clear-sky morning — afternoon clouds swallow the views more days than not.

Money-Saving Tips
- 1Beach kiosks rent chairs + umbrella for R$25 — hotels charge R$100 for the same sand.
- 2Por kilo (pay-by-weight) buffets do excellent lunch for R$40–60.
- 3Uber is cheap and the default — a Leblon ↔ Centro ride is R$25–35; never hail street taxis at night.
Getting Around
- 1GIG airport → Zona Sul: Uber/99 R$70–110, 45–70 min by traffic. The Premium bus (Real) is R$22 if you land in daylight.
- 2Metrô is clean, safe and beats traffic: Ipanema ↔ Centro in 25 min, R$7.50.
- 3Christ the Redeemer: take the official Trem do Corcovado from Cosme Velho — "vans" sold on the beach are gray-market.
Most Common Mistake
Flashing phones and jewelry on the beach or at night — Rio is wonderful but petty theft is real. Take a beach-only phone, leave the watch in the safe, and use Ubers after dark.
